How Climate Change Affects Poultry Production in Asia-Pacific Region?
2023/08/10
Our industry bears an enormous responsibility: to feed the growing population, sustainably and consistently, despite increasing challenges. And one of the biggest challenges is already looming large.
Animal agriculture, including poultry farming, is particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change. Increased extreme weather events, farm fires facilitated by drought, thermal pressure on farmed animals, reduced availability or increased prices of water, raw materials and electricity, and much more are already impacting the industry.
This is, in all likelihood, just the beginning. How exactly will poultry production be affected in the future -- and what can you do to future-proof your operation against the coming challenges?
ANSWERING THE CURRENT CHALLENGES OF SWINE FARMING
REDUCE SWINE PRODUCTION FROM THE EFFECTS OF MAJOR DISEASES
The number of pigs in the world is close to 800 million, and they are found in many different places. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), swine fever, and respiratory illnesses are among the common diseases that affect pig populations all over the world.
These illnesses cause high mortality rates, slowed herd growth, and huge financial losses for farmers. Regardless of the type of farm, Virbac offers solutions to reduce the effects of these diseases with the continual goal of maintaining both the health of the animals and the efficiency of the farm.
A GLOBAL AND INNOVATIVE STRATEGY FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Virbac propose a cross-cutting disease management that combines field audits, services, vaccinations and medications. Our approach aims to better consider animal welfare in breeding, with particular emphasis on prevention through vaccination, micronutrients and improved reproductive management. We also support the rational use of antibiotics. Antibiotics are essential in some cases, for example when disease is already present in the herd. We encourage individualized treatment and help veterinarians and breeders use new technology to deliver treatments at the right time, better controlling dosages, limiting treatments and providing better traceability.
GIVING PRIORITY TO PREVENTION AND STRENGTHENING OUR NATURAL DEFENSES
Permitting a developing total populace to approach quality food while safeguarding creature wellbeing and prosperity suggests an important variation of reproducing procedures, to underscore counteraction. Immunization is one of the mainstays of our way to deal with forestall irresistible sicknesses and advance clean equilibrium in pig ranches, by diminishing the quantity of impacted animals and mortality. Essentially, the arrangement of mineral enhancements to help the metabolic and safe elements of the creature at key minutes in its day to day existence, like growth, decreases the effect of illnesses and limits the requirement for healing medicines.
Last 2019, Virbac Philippines introduced Effitix®, an innovative parasiticde used to treat and prevent tick and flea infestations in dogs and cats. The advantages of this product described by the Global Marketing manager parasiticides.
Over 70% of cats and dogs in Europe are affected by issues related to external parasites during the summer season1. Among the main effects: bites, itching and transmission of pathogens. There are two possible options when dealing with this nuisance: treatments, which reduce or even eliminate parasitic activity once the animal is affected; or prevention designed to reduce the risk of new infestation, for example by killing the parasites in the environment.
On average, owners treat their animals 3 to 4 times a year, highlights how much treatment has shaped habits. Prevention is key, since new parasites can come from the environment and not only from the animal. According to a French study conducted at the national veterinary school of Nantes2, 30% of cats seen for a consultation, even though they get treated, still present with flea problems! The solution? Combine prevention and treatment into the same product.
A SPECIFIC FORMULA
Since July 2019, Virbac has made Effitix® Duo available to veterinarians; this is a spot-on fipronil-based and pyriproxifen-based solution for dogs and cats. Not only does this specific formula eliminate adult parasites once in contact with the animal, it also prevents their proliferation in the early stages of development in the domestic environment (eggs, larvae and subsequently nymphs). This is what experts and vets name integrated flea control.

Bad breath is a common complaint of pets' owners but it can also be a sign of periodontal or digestive issues that can be painful for the pets.
A HEALTHY DOLUTION TO FRESH BREATH
A pioneer in dental care for pets. Virbac has a 30 years of expertise in this field and a wide range of scientifically proven products (dental kits, toothpaste, mouthwashes, dental chews) for veterinary clinics.
As for humansm the causes of bad breath in dogs can be oral (tartar, plaque, bacteria...) or intestinal (gastrointestinal disorders, kidney problems, respirator, diabetes...). Bad breath is also one of the first signs of bad dental hygiene that can lead to more serious and painful disorders for the animal, such as gingivitis or periodontal diseases. It is therefore important to take care of the teeth of our four-legged companions.
In addition, dental kit or chews may strengthen the bones and ligaments of the jaw and naturally contributes to a good health by stimulating the production of saliva.

PCV2 is the primary agent of porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD) which causes severe economic loss worldwide.
PCV2 infection is required for PCVAD expression; however, co-infection with other viruses or bacteria can cause clinical PCVAD in the herd or increase the number of affected pigs.
Several pathogens have been identified that increase the trend and progression of the disease, including: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), Porcine parvovirus (PPV), Porcine tissue torsion (TTV), swine influenza virus (SIV) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and many other species.
The first global PCV2 vaccine formulated with the d genotype
SUIGEN PCV2 is an inactivated vaccine against de porcine circovirus, it is the first available commercial vaccines (among international players) containing the d-genotype which is today the predominant genotype on the field in most regions of the world.
Features:
---- A solution to fight against systematic but not compulsory losses ----
PCV2 vaccines were able to counteract almost completely the devastating effect of the disease, with a dramatic decrease in mortality and clinical signs related to wasting.
Piglets vaccination allows:
A number of infectious agents have been described as potential PCV-2 triggers under experimental and field conditions:
However, the list of infectious agents found in concomitance with PCV-2 cases under natural conditions is much more extensive
Vaccinations against PCV-2 does not only imply direct beneficial effects on pig productivity, but also contributes to reduction of antimicrobial use.
----An Efficient And Easy To Use Solution Against PCV2----
